The memory of Mr. Straus, who died in 2004, is a strong presence both in Mr. Galassi's office and in his book-a sendup of the publishing industry and in particular of the sex-fueled early days of Farrar, Straus, here renamed Purcell & Stern.

"He looms large in my imagination," said Mr. Galassi, 65 years old, of his old boss. "He was someone I admired and loved a lot, and a very, very colorful character. There was a rich lode to mine there."
